Action Alert on SB 161 (Huff)
Diastat Injections by Unlicensed Classified School Employees

Your immediate assistance is needed to urge Governor Jerry Brown to veto SB 161 (Huff) related to Diastat injections.

Despite significant opposition from labor, education and health organizations the Legislature passed SB 161 (Huff) in the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session.  As you know, SB 161 would allow unlicensed classified employees and teachers to volunteer to inject Diastat to epileptic students.

Diastat is valium that is injected rectally while the child is in the middle of a seizure.  Diastat also has to be injected wherever the child is having the seizure which could be on the playground, in the lunchroom, on a school bus or anywhere on the school campus.  It is very likely the injection will be done in the presence of other children and school employees.

We need you to send a letter to Governor Jerry Brown asking him to “VETO” SB 161.  It is always better to personalize letters to the Governor, and we encourage you to do so.  If you are unable to personalize a letter, please use the attached sample letter to send to the Governor.  You can fax your letters to the Governor at (916) 558-3160, and/or you can mail your letter to the address provided on the sample letter.

Other organizations opposing SB 161 include: the California Teachers Association, California Nurses Association, Service Employees International Union, California Federation of Teachers, United Teachers of Los Angeles, American Nurses Association, California Labor Federation, California Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and several other organizations.
